BIOGRAPHY
Born in Hong Kong,Cyrus Tang moved to Australia in 2003. She finished her Master of Fine Arts in Monash University, Australia in 2010. Over this period, Cyrus has been awarded residencies in programs including Helsinki International Artist Program 2013; The National Art Studio in South Korea in 2012; and Cité International de Arts, Paris in 2009. Tang is captivated by how impermanence and decay can serve as expressions of nostalgia. She deliberately employs labor-intensive analog techniques and works with mutable materials like wax, clay, ash, steam, snow, and hair to bring out the visual effects that permeate her photo media.
PROJECT
Cyrus Tang’s work reflects the sentiment of nostalgia through the translation of disappearance into remembrance and fantasy. Unlike traditional photographs, her photographic work is experimental and emphasizes time. Each photograph is the memory of certain places, certain times over a long period of time. In this residency, Cyrus plans to produce a new series of photographs which engage with the ruins in the city of Fes in an aesthetic of disappearance. The new series of photographs will be informed by the following: Geometrical pattern and life: Cyrus appeals to traditional Islamic art, with its patterns and geometrical forms, particularly the highly geometric and repetitive form of muqarnas. She is planning to create a new series of photographs that incorporate maps, postcards, photographs and other ephemera to evoke the complex history of Morocco. Color and cultural identity: Color has always had an eminent position in history. The symbolism of color varies between cultures. In Fes, Cyrus hopes to engage in a deeper inquiry into color and how it conveys emotion and symbolic meaning, using muted colors and imagery that suggests a long and layered history.
